Prayer
Carmelites are called to live in allegiance to Jesus Christ, embracing the gospel as the supreme norm of their lives by the power of the Spirit. Prayer enables us to live out our calling, it helps our personal relationship with God to grow – it is a dialogue between God and each one of us. St Theresa saw prayer as spending time with the One who was her friend.
Carmelites believe that praying with a listening heart allows God to be God for us and also effects a transformation in our lives. Silence and solitude even in a busy life are pre-requisites for prayer and a contemplative approach. Carmelites come from personal prayer which is often nourished by pondering the scriptures (Lectio Divina) to the Eucharist which is the culmination of prayer and bonds into community. Among devotional prayers, the Rosary and other Marian devotions are important for Carmelites. As the Priory is a major centre of pilgrimage, the community does all it can to take care of the spiritual needs of pilgrims who come from a variety of backgrounds.
